Network Attached Storage (NAS)

NAS stands for network attached storage. It is a self-contained computer that connects to a home, or business network. A NAS consists of hard disk storage that includes a multi disk raid system, which allows for a file-based storage platform that allows clients (computers) to access a shared storage space.

The main purpose of a NAS is to provide centralized, shared storage. Most consumer and small business NAS support SATA drives, but there are a few models out there that support SSD drives. It's not unusual to see NAS for home users support up to 8TB storage capacity. Business-class NAS boxes typically scale even higher, with some offering petabytes of capacity.

ONE, TWO, OR FOUR BAYS? Since a NAS device is at the heart just a container for a hard drive or drives, the No. 1 spec for any NAS unit is its potential storage capacity, determined by the number of drive bays it includes. Most consumer-grade and home-office NAS units have one or two bays, while models designed for the office have four or more.
