Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) are designed to provide an alternative source of power to electrical equipment in the event of an irregularity or failure of the mains power feeding the equipment.

A loss of power, even momentarily, can cause IT systems and sensitive equipment to crash. A UPS maintains power by switching instantaneously to batteries in the event of a power failure, or even just a dip in power (a brownout). They also condition the power supply to reduce unwanted spikes and harmonics.

A UPS is typically used to protect hardware such as computers, data centers, telecommunication equipment or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power disruption could cause injuries, fatalities, serious business disruption or data loss.

How do I know which one I need?

For non-critical applications, an off-line UPS will normally resolve Power Quality Issues in cases where there is total loss of power, sags and surges. An off-line UPS provides a temporary battery power if there is a power cut. (Approx 10 minutes)

Higher level power protection, resolving total loss of power, sags, surges brownouts and spikes. Will require a line interactive UPS. Providing temporary back up if power fails.

Complete protection for mission critical systems, resolving all the Issues above including Line noise, Frequency variation, Switching Transient and Harmonic distortion will require on-line double conversion UPS technology. This type regenerates power supplies at all times, correcting irregularities including long term battery power. The most advanced UPS available.
