If you want to launch a transactional website (eCommerce), at some stage you will require your own dedicated server. A web server provides a company with a dedicated machine to host its website and serve up requested pages to users/customers whilst maximising availability (up time) and network security through firewalls.

Important considerations when specifying a web server include the number of pages being hosted on the server and the expected traffic passing through the site which will determine the required bandwidth.

Microsoft's Server 2003 and 2008 are both available as Web Editions which are optimised for web server usage.

Recommended Hardware:

Minimum Spec: 1U or 2U Rack, 4GB of RAM, Single CPU, 2x small Hard Drives with hardware Raid, Windows 2003 or 2008 Server Web Edition (includes IIS Internet Information System)
